Inbuilt Obsolescence
(Mankind has the ultimate inbuilt obsolescence, for the soul is forever shedding its body)
My cells they renew each second
With the slightest change in form
A constant flow of movement
As if I am reborn
Each one it seems is older
Although it looks the same
But nothing in its make up
Can forecast its domain
And so my skin gets wrinkled
As muscles waste away
And when it comes to eyesight
It fades with lights display
The voice that lives within me
Never seems to change
As it waits until that moment
When all things rearrange
It’s inbuilt obsolescence
And there is nothing I can do
For the carriage that is my body
Will one day not renew
Autumn Awakening
As autumn whispers through the sky
The trees with weeping leaves do cry
Longing for that summer sun
That brought a joy to everyone
Now alas the year in haste
Has no more time in which to waste
For creatures now both large and small
Will heed the song of natures call
Some to sleep and dream away
While others gather without delay
The last of flowers in display
Will coax the insects all their way
Then in the shortness of each breath
As evening chills begin their test
I close the door and sit before a fire.
Autumn or Fall
We say the autumn and they say the fall
Just who is right does not matter at all
As leaves seek adventure and part with their trees
By making the most of each passing breeze
I look at the starkness that they leave behind
And wish them safe journeys in whatever they find
The trees that remain no more will give shade
As the last of the sunlit through their boughs it does raid
It’s then in that moment all at once I can see
The meaning of seasons as they are to me
A cycle of movement between earth and sky
That is neither an autumn nor fall I reply
But just the birth of winter
